Iran accuses US of lying about wanting to resume talks

Iran accused the United States Tuesday of lying about wanting to resume talks between the two countries in the wake of new sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump earlier this week.
“You say you really want to hold talks with us,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said during a press conference, state-run Press TV reported.
No Iran strikes, but Trump’s sanctions play still risks war
“But at the same time you’re saying that you want to boycott and sanction our foreign minister, so you’re lying,” Rouhani said.
The Iranian President added that the US could have at least “given the world a chance to believe you that you are telling the truth when you say that you want talks — but immediately you proved that you are lying.”
“If you really wanted negotiations, we would hold talks with you,” Rouhani said.
The comments come as Trump announced fresh sanctions against Iran Monday, partly in retaliation over the downing of a US drone last week.
