Pope: ‘Defenseless people’ targeted in US mass shootings

Pope Francis on the recent spate of mass shootings in the U.S., condemning the acts of violence on “defenseless people.”
During his Sunday message to thousands from St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, Francis said he was spiritually close to the victims, the injured and the families impacted by the three recent mass shootings that he said had “bloodied Texas, California and Ohio”.
Reuters reports he specifically mentioned the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, which occurred Saturday, the shooting in Dayton, Ohio early Sunday morning and the attack at a garlic festival in Gilroy, Calif. last week.
Francis reportedly led the crowd of thousands in reciting a Hail Mary for the victims.
The El Paso shooting claimed the lives of at least 20 people after a 21-year-old white male opened fire on a crowded Walmart. The shooter surrendered to police without further incident.
The shooting in Dayton left at least nine dead and injured nearly 30 others. That incident took place just hours after the shooting in El Paso.
Dayton police say the shooting occurred in a historic downtown district near a bar. The shooter was killed by officers responding to the scene within a minute.
A shooting at a popular garlic festival in Gilroy last week took the lives of three and people injured more than a dozen others.
