Republican wins Mississippi governor race

Mississippi Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves beat out his Democratic challenger in the state governor’s race on Tuesday night.
Reeves’ victory against Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood was the lone bright spot for the GOP in a number of key national races that were said to offer insights into how next year’s presidential contest could unfold.
Democrats dominated the headlines in the other closely-watched races — the Kentucky governor’s race and the Virginia state legislative contests.
In Kentucky, Democratic candidate for governor Andy Beshear declared victory over Republican incumbent Gov. Matt Bevin.
Bevin, however, refused to concede.
And in Virginia, Democrats took full control of the statehouse for the first time in over two decades.
