Newsweek said Saturday that the magazine had fired a writer assigned to cover President Trump and his family after the reporter wrote an article about the president’s Thanksgiving plans that did not initially include his trip to Afghanistan to meet with U.S. service members.
The magazine told the Washington Examiner in a statement that reporter Jessica Kwong was fired after the magazine’s editors investigated “the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan.”
“The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action,” said Newsweek’s spokesperson.
Kwong told the Examiner’s Mike Brest in an interview that she wrote the article before Trump’s plans to visit Afghanistan were made public and contended that an on-duty editor failed to update her article after the president’s trip was announced.
In a tweet sent before her termination, Kwong wrote that her article had been updated and that she had deleted an earlier tweet about the president’s plans.
“Trump headed to Afghanistan to surprise U.S. troops on Thanksgiving. … Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the president’s surprise visit to Afghanistan-an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot,” she tweeted.

Newsweek’s spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill on Kwong’s assertion that an editor had failed to update her article.
The president later mocked the publication over the inaccuracy, tweeting, “I thought Newsweek was out of business?”
