Police shoot man in suspected ‘terrorist-related’ incident in London

Authorities say three people were injured, one of whom is in life-threatening condition.
U.K. police shot dead a man in south London in what they described as a “terrorist-related” incident on Sunday in which three people were injured.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that at around 2 p.m. local time, a male suspect stabbed two people. Officers shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they believe the third injured person sustained minor injuries from glass when officers fired at the suspect. A device was found strapped to the man’s body, but it was determined to be fake.
One man is in hospital in life-threatening condition, while one woman sustained non-life threatening injuries and another woman has minor injuries.
Police said the situation has since been “fully contained,” and officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command are now leading an investigation into the incident.
“The incident was quickly declared as a terrorist incident and we believe it to be Islamist-related,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lucy D’Orsi.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his condolences to those injured in a statement and thanked police officers for their quick response. He added that on Monday there would be an announcement of “further plans for fundamental changes to the system for dealing with those convicted of terrorism offences.”
“My thoughts are with the injured victims and their loved ones following today’s horrific attack in Streatham,” Johnson said.
Social media posts from the scene showed streets in the area crowded with emergency vehicles.
One person tweeted: “We’ve been evacuated, we have no idea what happened, but we’re safe, no idea when we’ll get back in, thoughts are with the people directly affected.”
