Trump predicts Xi ‘will be successful’ at stopping coronavirus outbreak

President Donald Trump on Friday praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s response to the Wuhan coronavirus, predicting his foreign counterpart “will be successful” in combating the outbreak that has killed hundreds of people.
“Just had a long and very good conversation by phone with President Xi of China. He is strong, sharp and powerfully focused on leading the counterattack on the Coronavirus,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
“He feels they are doing very well, even building hospitals in a matter of only days. Nothing is easy, but he will be successful, especially as the weather starts to warm & the virus hopefully becomes weaker, and then gone,” the president continued.
“Great discipline is taking place in China, as President Xi strongly leads what will be a very successful operation. We are working closely with China to help!”
Trump last week insisted the coronavirus would “have a very good ending for us,” as Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar deemed it a public health emergency and the World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency.
The administration has scaled up its efforts to contain the coronavirus’ threat to Americans in recent days, and White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said on Sunday that it poses a “low risk” to the United States.
Tensions between Washington and Beijing have escalated amid the outbreak, with the Chinese foreign ministry on Monday accusing the U.S. government of having “inappropriately overreacted” to the coronavirus and not providing “any substantial assistance.”
The WHO on Monday delivered to Chinese authorities a list of U.S. government experts offered by the Department of Health and Human Services to help assess the coronavirus, but the Chinese government has not yet acknowledged the transmission.
More than 600 people have died as a result of the coronavirus, and more than 31,000 have been infected worldwide. A dozen cases of the coronavirus have been reported in the U.S.
